I know that some of the experts say that when you dream, all of the characters in your dreams are a representation of a certain aspect of your own psyche, but honestly!
I was a man dressed as a soldier, finding my way through a series of tunnels. There were a number of rooms off these tunnels, some contained people who were in hiding whilst others contained people/familes who were being held prisoner. After working my way through these tunnels, avoiding some huge men with machine guns and other nasty killing equipment, I arrived in a large underground hall, which to my surprise was a flower market! I remember that I scooped up armfulls of daffodil bunches, then instead of leaving, I went back into the tunnels and gave each of the people and families in hiding or in captivity a bunch of flowers. Only then did I leave this subterranean place.
Instead of emerging into daylight, I arived into a huge hall. It was something like a cross between a ballroom and a theatre. And now I was a woman again. I was stood at the back of the hall looking down and across at the mass of people in there. It didn’t take me long to realise that something wasn’t right, and that what should have been a scene of revellry was in fact a scene composed of people screaming in terror whilst others were shrieking in laughter as they tore at the throats of their victims.
I noticed a figure at the front of the hall who seemed to be orchestrating the chaos, a figure whom I am very familiar with from past experience. He looked straight across the hall, through the blood and the bodies, directly into my eyes. I looked around me and saw that there were several women on either side of me, dressed in tattered and dirty ball gowns, as a looked at them they opened they mouths in the most horrific smile, baring their animalistic fangs and starting to speak in hissing and spitting voices.
They were telling me that they were ‘his’ and that I had no place being there. They would rip me apart and serve me to him. Nice, I thought, but no thanks. So instead of fearing them I turned on them and became as they were. I drew my body upright and turned to face them. I spoke to them in the same hissing and spitting way that they had spoken to me. I simply said: ‘You cannot harm me as I am his favourite, and to do so would be to destroy yourselves.’ They then turned to one another and an argument ensued about who exactly was his favourite which resulted in them turning on eachother and allowing me to move away.
I moved to the centre of the room, towards this thing of a man that was ‘holding court’ there. I saw a table laden with food, only for it to dawn on me that the food was not composed of animal flesh, but of human flesh. There were still humans alive who were stood around this table and I made myself known to them. As I was working towards the people, the Lord of Chaos was working his was towards me. We met at the centre of the room, him at one end of this grotesque table and me at the other. The room turned silent, the killing stopped and it was like the place itself was holding its breath.
We spoke, though I cannot clearly recall the words. I know that he was angered by my responses to him, as he crawled onto the table and started to almost slither across to me. One of the people behind me handed me something, which I assumed was going to be a weapon of some description, but it was more food. I looked at this terrible fleshy offering and remember channeling all of my revulsion, all of my distaste and disgust into it as I held it in my hands. I offfered it towards him with a smile, a peace offering, or an apology perhaps, and he took it from me with his long bony fingers.
As he bit into it juices, fats and bloods rand down his terrible face then he stood upright, threw his head back and laughed a shrieking horrible laugh, then stopped. He looked into my face, saw that I was still smiling and for a brief moment he looked confused, alarmed before collapsing onto the table. He started crawling towards me once more, but I did not back away, instead I watched him burn. It was as though he was burning from the inside out, he was falling apart, disintergrating before my eyes. The creatures in the room started to scream as their world fell apart.
We’ve all been there, having woken up in the early hours of the morning, our hearts firmly lodged in our throats and a feeling of…what?
Well that’s just it isn’t it? Once we are awake we generally forget the images and emotions that roused us. This is why its a good idea to keep a dream journal. It doesn’t need to be a special book or magically embellished journal, a simple notebook will suffice, just the right size to fit onto your bedside table or to keep on the floor near your bed, somewhere where it can always be within easy reach.

When you reach that point of waking, reach for your journal and pen. There is no need to waste time trying to form sentences or keeping things grammatically correct, just jot down quickly the things that you remember. It may be nothing more than a few words to start with, perhaps tunnel, chased and scared are all that come to mind, once you have regained some of that composure that seems to vanish from us when we wake up with a jolt, look at the words that you have written, or perhaps the images that you have drawn, and focus on them a little more.
So, you wrote down tunnel. What can you remember about the tunnel, was it dark or light, was it stone or brick? You may remember you touched the side of the tunnel wall and it felt damp, whatever springs to mind write it all down and do the same for each of the original words. For example chased, were you running or in a vehicle? What did the ground feel like beneath your feet? Why did you feel scared? Did you know what or who was chasing you? You will find that for each question you ask, your answers will provoke a further question until you get to the point where you have reconstructed your dream in it’s entirety.
You may now have pages of disjointed words and scribbled images, but take them all and place them into a time line so that you can follow your dream through, like a short story from start to finish. Are you still scared or do you know what your dream was representing and now have a clearer idea of why you had the reaction that you did?
An exercise like this may seem difficult to work through at first, but its a skill that comes with practice and repetition, you will find eventually that you will be able to use this restructuring process in other areas in your life as a general aid to memory, as well as ending up with books full of weird and wonderful short stories.
So now you feel that you are ready to progress your psychic/spiritual gift, so what do you need to do?
You may well have heard ‘horror’ stories about people ‘inviting spirit in’ or ‘dabbling with the occult’, where individuals have ended up with unknown spiritual entities running amok in their home, or even worse, possessing the individual themselves! It is no wonder that anyone approaching spiritual contact feels uneasy, perhaps a little scared about what the are ‘letting themselves in for’. There are so many programmes on TV, and magazines relating tales of supernatural woe that it can be difficult to tell fact from fiction.
If you speak to any experienced psychic or medium they will tell you that one of the most important skills that you need to learn is how to ground and protect yourself. So what exactly does this mean? To put in in simple terms, think of yourself as a cartoon character, you go through life happily without incident, then strange things start happening, and as you open your mind to the idea of spiritual contact a small light appears above your head, almost like a light bulb. this light shines quite dimly at first, but as you open your mind further and start to ‘test’ your intuition and ask for signs from spirit, the light begins to burn brighter and brighter. So here you are walking around with a huge bright light above your head, in a community where everyone else is dull and their minds closed. Just like moths to a flame your light will start to attract spirit wishing to let you know that they are there, because they see your light as an open communication channel – like an unsecured broadband connection!
The best time for a spirit to make contact with you, is when you are relaxed, when your mind is unoccupied by the everyday things that keep us distracted from one task to another. The time before sleep, when you are comfortable and relaxed, slipping into a dreamlike state is the ideal opportunity for them to make their move. How many times have you been about to fall asleep when you have heard a noise, thought someone was there, or turned bleary eyed and imagined that you have seen a figure at the foot of your bed? You will probably find that as you develop psychically you will have more disturbed nights, more vivid dreams and more unexplained phenomena than you know what do do with! This is where the ‘Grounding and Protection’ come in.
Think of it this way, would you go deep sea diving without a wetsuit and safety equipment? I thought not, its the same with psychic protection, it’s your personal safety equipment. How you choose to protect yourself is up to you, you can find a host of different methods at ‘Circle of Light‘ my spiritual forum. The most often taught method is for you to visualise yourself inside a golden bubble, inside the bubble you are protected from negative influences, both spiritual and physical. You are surrounding yourself in a golden protective light, building a shield between you and everything else. The more you practice the visualisation the stronger your shield will become. It is a great place to start, but then how you choose to visualise your shield is up to you, what works for one person may not necessarily work for another.
By ‘grounding’ yourself, you are quite literally anchoring yourself to the earth plain, this helps to keep your feet firmly on the ground, and stops you from losing touch with reality. It also helps to ground all of that psychic energy that is powering the giant light above your head! One of the simplest and most effective ways of doing this is by visualising roots, like those of a great Oak, extending out from the soles of your feet, deep into the earth below you. As the roots travel downwards they spread in all directions grasping the earth and helping to keep you steady. As with any grounding or protection exercise, the more that you practice it the stronger it will become and the more noticeable the effects will be.
How many times each day you choose to practice the grounding and protection exercises is up to the individual. Though I would suggest that when first starting out you do it as many times a day that you can remember, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night. As you get better at doing it the less often you will need to do it, and it will become as automatic as making your morning cuppa. You will find though, that as your skills develop you may need to adjust the levels of protection that you apply, this could be as simple as placing your bubble within another bubble, or visualising a reflective surface on the outside of your bubble, you will know what will work best for you.
There are a good selection of books on psychic development, as well as CD’s etc. at The Covenstead.
Finally, to ensure that you get a good night sleep, without interruptions from visiting spirit, you need to learn the art of ‘closing down’, this is basically how you switch off your ‘lighbulb’ and put up a closed for business sign. Again their are a multitude of methods for doing this (see Circle of Light) and methods vary from person to person. You could visualise yourself inside a giant flower, closing up the petals around you one by one until the flower is completely closed, or you could visualise yourself crawling inside a sack and closing it tight above you head. I have know a few people start to feel claustrophobic when doing this, so if it is something you suffer from, I’d suggest a more suitable method. If you are have an understanding chakras you could visualise a coloured light at each of the chakra points and turn them off one by one by one from base to crown. Or perhaps if you are a biker, visualise yourself putting on protective leathers, followed by your helmet, finally closing your visor. You get the idea? However you chose to close down is up to you, just remember that you are in effect sealing yourself off from spirit. You can always open yourself up again in the morning if you wish by reversing the close down process.
Often when starting out upon psychic development you can feel overwhelmed by the amount of information that just seems to pop into your head day and night, it can make you anxious, sleepless and sometimes can get you down as you feel that you no longer have any peace. By learning to successfully ground, protect and close down, you are learning to take control of your gift manage how and when you use it, which is something that a lot of people forget they can do.
